Dead Space – would you want a remake? (pic: EA)

GameCentral readers name the other retro games they’d like to see get a remake like Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil.

The question for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Cranston, who asked what would you change about the story and graphics and what elements would you ensure were exactly the same as before?

There were plenty of different suggestions, even if most came from the PS1 era and the very earliest days of 3D graphics. Although Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 were amongst the other popular choices.

Horrifying remakes
This is an easy one for me. It’s gotta be a Dead Space remake. Or Dead Space 2. Either of those and I’ll be happy. I’d even be happy with just a trilogy remaster. I just want this IP to be revived again somehow. I also wouldn’t say no to a Dead Space 4, but I feel they would go either the remake or remaster route first to see how well the series is still received before pumping a full-on budget towards a new chapter in the series.

I’d also love to see a Silent Hill remake. We’ve had various attempts again at this series with plenty of negativity around Konami and Kojima’s fallout. But, we did get recent news of two possible new games so that’s a positive sign. Even if Konami are denying all rumours.

GC: Konami did deny it, but the rumours of a remake are still going strong.

Leave the cheese
An interesting Hot Topic which I have mixed feelings about. I’m currently replaying Tomb Raider Anniversary, which apart from a few changes is pretty faithful to the original game while also improving on it. Lara is far more agile than on PlayStation 1 and the environments and puzzles are larger and more complex. They also developed the story to tie in with Legend and Underworld. I feel that trilogy of Tomb Raider games massively benefitted from having Lara’s ‘daddy’ Toby Gard on board.

Of my all-time favourite games the original Devil May Cry comes to mind for a remake because as awesome as it is, the combat isn’t as varied and deep as it is in the later games. But unless they brought Hideki Kamiya back I would be very concerned about how it would turn out, as I find Dante has become far less likeable as the series has gone on.

And then of course we have my favourite game of all time: Resident Evil 4. The rumours that a remake of this classic is already underway doesn’t excite me at all. As Calcula said in this week’s Inbox, I think they could well ‘take all the cheese out’ and it would lose its charm. To me Resident Evil 4 is a one-time only game, lightning in a bottle, and I think it would be near impossible to recapture that magic.

Time will tell I guess, but I love that game so much I can only see any attempt to remake it not living up to Leon’s original Spanish holiday from hell!

Occam of Time
This is not a brave choice, and I certainly will not be the only one to choose it, but in the spirit of Occam’s Razor I simply have to put forward Zelda: Ocarina Of Time as the game I would most like to see remade. It is not just my favourite game of all time, it is my favourite anything of all time. No book, piece of music, or cherished childhood memory even comes close to matching the way I felt when I first booted it up on my N64.

Having completed it dozens of times, being able to experience it anew, 23 years later, through a remaster would be exhilarating. The graphic design was always superb, so imagine reworking the visuals with today’s tech.

It would also be a fantastic companion piece to the Breath Of The Wild games, offering a modern take on old school Zelda whilst Breath Of The Wild goes off in its own open world direction. Will it happen? Well after all the love Nintendo is allegedly showing Mario for his 35th anniversary let’s not forget that next year Zelda turns 35 too…

Reach for the Skies
One game I had fond memories of and would like to see a remake of is Skies Of Arcadia. One of my favourite games on the Dreamcast, I loved having my own island and ship to fly around in. It had a few too many random battles at the time, but that could be easily fixed.

Another game, Racing Destruction Set I loved being able to change the gravity drop, oil slicks, and put ice on the corners. I have tried several similar modern versions, but none have quite got the same feeling. Wreckfest, in terms of racing, was probably the closest.

Needs and hopes
I assume we’re not counting Dino Crisis and Onimusha because they’re too obvious, although I honestly doubt we’ll get Dino Crisis. The remaster proved Capcom remembers Onimusha and is interested in it but they haven’t cared a damn about Dino Crisis for almost two decades now. They won’t even put Regina in Marvel Vs. Capcom!

A part of me would like to see an attempt to turn a 2D game like Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night into 3D but that would be very difficult to do and I really don’t know what developer would be up to it that Konami could work for.

The best bet instead would probably be Soul Reaver, as that was a great game in its time but has not aged well. It had a really good story though and deserves to be experienced by modern gamers. I think that’s what remakes should be for really. No one today is going to play the original Resident Evil 2 and have any fun so the remake serves a real need there.

A second hope
I would love to see the original Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic get a remake! I think that this game is long overdue for one. It has one of the best stories in not just gaming, but in all of Star Wars in my opinion, and needs to be brought forward to this generation so younger players who may not have ever played it can experience it!

I think I would keep the story nearly exactly the same, but I can imagine how great all the planets would look with current or next gen graphics! I would definitely change the combat system, as it is a bit archaic now and I know friends who would never play it because of the combat system.

I would make it a lot more action oriented, but still a role-playing game where you could level up your skills and attributes. I’m thinking action that would be a bit of a cross between Mass Effect 2 and Jedi: Fallen Order. Yeah, give me Carth as a playable companion with Mass Effect’s shooting mechanics!

Anyway, my fingers are crossed that this one becomes reality!

Three good choices
This is going to sound boring but one game I hope they remake is Final Fantasy 6, as I never played it at the time, since I didn’t have a SNES and as Final Fantasy 7 was my first Japanese role-playing game, which I first played in 2000 on PS1.

The reason I say it is boring is because the Final Fantasy 7 remake has not been finished yet and I am asking for another Final Fantasy game to be remade, not that they are boring games – not at all. I have got Final Fantasy 6 on PlayStation 3 downloaded from PSN Store. I have started it a few times from the beginning and not got far because for me the game has aged a lot, even though I didn’t play it at the time – although I did play my Mega Drive and a few SNES games on friends consoles.

I will try it again at some point, and try to play further and complete it, as I heard the story is good and that some people think it is the best Final Fantasy. Another game that I wish they would remake is Panzer Dragoon Saga which I played for the first time and completed in 2007. I really enjoyed this game a lot, it did cost me a lot at the time to buy it and it’s worth even more now, going by eBay’s prices.

It would be cool to play it with some updated visuals and 5.1 sound. It’s still a good game but when I played it in 2007 the cut scenes were good but they would look much better nowadays in full screen, as I think the window for the cutscenes was a lot smaller than they are now.

My third choice for remaking would be Snatcher as you can only get the English language version on Sega Mega CD and like Panzer Dragoon Saga is going for huge prices on eBay. I was disappointed that the PC Engine only had the option for Japanese language, I now know it was never released on PC Engine in English but unless I learn Japanese or pay £350 for the Sega CD version then I won’t be able to play it.

I originally got Panzer Dragoon Saga UK PAL version for about £100-ish in 2005. I think creating a good remake opens up the game to new gamers and gamers who originally played the game, for example Final Fantasy 7, 20 years ago. I wasn’t sure if I would get Final Fantasy 7 Remake but
after all the good reviews for it, including from GameCentral, I will get it at some point.
