PS5 Reveal and Xbox Showcase Could Come Sooner After E3 Cancelled

With this year’s E3 cancelled over coronavirus concerns, the PS5‘s reveal and games showcases for both it and the Xbox Series X could come sooner than expected. Sony has unveiled the specs of their next-gen console but not the console itself, and there are surely a host of exclusive announcements that each company were stashing away for this year’s now totally vacant convention season.

It’s as strange of a time for console manufactures as it is for their quarantined customers, and Microsoft and Sony may go down wildly different routes to show off their new machines in response to the ongoing global health crisis. Although Sony planned to once again snub its formerly annual E3 showcase, the crowded field of gaming industry conferences that revolve around E3 still greatly affects the company’s timing when it comes to announcements. And there will almost certainly be no shortage of those as the year goes on, with first-party exclusives being in the later stretches of development and each console being tentatively slated for launch during the 2020 holiday season.

Related: How To Make Sure You Secure A PS5 Pre-Order

One games industry analyst says that the information vacuum left by E3’s absence will be filled sooner rather than later. Daniel Ahmad took to Twitter to share the below tweet, claiming knowledge that the cancelled conference’s scheduled announcements “have been moved out of that single week,” with some of them being moved to take place “much earlier” and others pushed back to “much later” dates. While admitting that some public reveals will still take place as previously planned, Ahmad also claimed that the “first proper next gen console/games showcase is much earlier,” which would be an unprecedented and exciting development in such an uncertain time.

The obvious question is what the biggest news of an upcoming next-gen showcase will be, as there’s still so much about either console and their launch lineups that remains unknown. It could be anything from a full reveal of the PS5 console and its features to a sizzle reel of what’s been going behind the doors of Xbox Games Studios, and there won’t be any way of knowing for sure until leaks spring or the announcements suddenly drop online. Taking the current pandemic and the logistical hell it’s causing for virtually every business on the planet into account, Ahmad clarified that this bizarre situation is still unfolding in a follow-up tweet and “COVID-19 could actually change plans right at the last minute.”

Tough times and cool heads may have inspired a cooling of public tensions between Sony and Microsoft, but there’s still a console war brewing for this holiday season (barring disaster-related delays, of course). Players with limited cash will have a choice to make when the PS5 and Xbox Series X come, and well-timed announcements could prove key for either company in their battle to coerce customers to their side of the aisle.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Leaker Rebukes Recent Early Development Reports

CSGO Surpasses Dota2’s All-Time Concurrent Player Record

The insanely popular shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, also known as CSGO, has shattered player records once more, this time by besting Dota 2’s all-time record for concurrent players. Valve’s beloved bomb-defusal shooter has seen fantastic numbers throughout the last year, and March 2020 saw CSGO with over 1 million concurrent players, a feat never before seen in the game’s lifetime. Even more impressive is the fact that, at the time, CSGO was averaging just over 700k players a day.

CSGO’s rapid player increase comes at an interesting time. The game saw piqued interest after Valve released it’s latest operation, “Shattered Web.” Additionally, as governments urge the global community to stay home amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, more people are staying indoors and taking up gaming as a hobby. As a result, PC gaming giant Steam garnered unprecedented numbers, also setting a new all-time user record.

Esports consultant Rod “Slasher” Breslau took to Twitter recently, elated at CSGO’s growth. His research shows the legendary FPS has reached an all-time peak of more than 1.3 million concurrent players, a number that surpasses Dota 2’s previous record by almost two hundred thousand players. Furthermore, the statistics show CSGO has more than double the amount of in-game players.

Dota 2 held it’s record (1.2 million users) for four years. While other titles have come close, CSGO is the first game to not just meet but surpass Dota 2’s longstanding achievement, and its flourishing player base contradicts what critics foretold. For years, nay-sayers held staunch to the idea that the CSGO community was nearing its inevitable death. With the release of Valorant’s closed beta, many believed the nail was basically in the coffin. In particular, the perceived similarities between CSGO and Valorant led fans to suggest Riot’s new game would greatly overshadow Valve’s FPS. As more players gain access to Riot’s closed beta, however, they’re realizing that CSGO features unique mechanics that will forever separate the two titles.

Interestingly, it seems as though CSGO is experiencing a perfect storm, as a series of unfortunate events has breathed life into a 20-year-old franchise. The community’s disappointment in the lack of Valorant Twitch drops is driving players to step back into CSGO servers, and Valve developers are handling Counter Strike: Global Offensive updates in smart ways. Shortly after Valorant’s closed beta, a series of CSGO updates rolled out, addressing issues the community had urged the developers to fix. It’s astonishing to see CSGO’s position in gaming remain strong, and only time will tell what new heights it will reach.

Grand Theft Auto 6 to Be Smaller-Scale, Expanded Via DLC

Weekend Hot Topic, part 1: What should be the next big game remake?

Dead Space – would you want a remake? (pic: EA)

GameCentral readers name the other retro games they’d like to see get a remake like Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil.

The question for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Cranston, who asked what would you change about the story and graphics and what elements would you ensure were exactly the same as before?

There were plenty of different suggestions, even if most came from the PS1 era and the very earliest days of 3D graphics. Although Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 were amongst the other popular choices.

Horrifying remakes
This is an easy one for me. It’s gotta be a Dead Space remake. Or Dead Space 2. Either of those and I’ll be happy. I’d even be happy with just a trilogy remaster. I just want this IP to be revived again somehow. I also wouldn’t say no to a Dead Space 4, but I feel they would go either the remake or remaster route first to see how well the series is still received before pumping a full-on budget towards a new chapter in the series.

I’d also love to see a Silent Hill remake. We’ve had various attempts again at this series with plenty of negativity around Konami and Kojima’s fallout. But, we did get recent news of two possible new games so that’s a positive sign. Even if Konami are denying all rumours.
Jack_the_Ripper9 (PSN ID)/SW-0135-3615-5328

GC: Konami did deny it, but the rumours of a remake are still going strong.

Leave the cheese
An interesting Hot Topic which I have mixed feelings about. I’m currently replaying Tomb Raider Anniversary, which apart from a few changes is pretty faithful to the original game while also improving on it. Lara is far more agile than on PlayStation 1 and the environments and puzzles are larger and more complex. They also developed the story to tie in with Legend and Underworld. I feel that trilogy of Tomb Raider games massively benefitted from having Lara’s ‘daddy’ Toby Gard on board.

Of my all-time favourite games the original Devil May Cry comes to mind for a remake because as awesome as it is, the combat isn’t as varied and deep as it is in the later games. But unless they brought Hideki Kamiya back I would be very concerned about how it would turn out, as I find Dante has become far less likeable as the series has gone on.

And then of course we have my favourite game of all time: Resident Evil 4. The rumours that a remake of this classic is already underway doesn’t excite me at all. As Calcula said in this week’s Inbox, I think they could well ‘take all the cheese out’ and it would lose its charm. To me Resident Evil 4 is a one-time only game, lightning in a bottle, and I think it would be near impossible to recapture that magic.

Time will tell I guess, but I love that game so much I can only see any attempt to remake it not living up to Leon’s original Spanish holiday from hell!
LastYearsModel

Occam of Time
This is not a brave choice, and I certainly will not be the only one to choose it, but in the spirit of Occam’s Razor I simply have to put forward Zelda: Ocarina Of Time as the game I would most like to see remade. It is not just my favourite game of all time, it is my favourite anything of all time. No book, piece of music, or cherished childhood memory even comes close to matching the way I felt when I first booted it up on my N64.

Having completed it dozens of times, being able to experience it anew, 23 years later, through a remaster would be exhilarating. The graphic design was always superb, so imagine reworking the visuals with today’s tech.

It would also be a fantastic companion piece to the Breath Of The Wild games, offering a modern take on old school Zelda whilst Breath Of The Wild goes off in its own open world direction. Will it happen? Well after all the love Nintendo is allegedly showing Mario for his 35th anniversary let’s not forget that next year Zelda turns 35 too…

Reach for the Skies
One game I had fond memories of and would like to see a remake of is Skies Of Arcadia. One of my favourite games on the Dreamcast, I loved having my own island and ship to fly around in. It had a few too many random battles at the time, but that could be easily fixed.

Another game, Racing Destruction Set I loved being able to change the gravity drop, oil slicks, and put ice on the corners. I have tried several similar modern versions, but none have quite got the same feeling. Wreckfest, in terms of racing, was probably the closest.
Pearcety72 (PSN ID)

Needs and hopes
I assume we’re not counting Dino Crisis and Onimusha because they’re too obvious, although I honestly doubt we’ll get Dino Crisis. The remaster proved Capcom remembers Onimusha and is interested in it but they haven’t cared a damn about Dino Crisis for almost two decades now. They won’t even put Regina in Marvel Vs. Capcom!

A part of me would like to see an attempt to turn a 2D game like Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night into 3D but that would be very difficult to do and I really don’t know what developer would be up to it that Konami could work for.

The best bet instead would probably be Soul Reaver, as that was a great game in its time but has not aged well. It had a really good story though and deserves to be experienced by modern gamers. I think that’s what remakes should be for really. No one today is going to play the original Resident Evil 2 and have any fun so the remake serves a real need there.
Zebra

A second hope
I would love to see the original Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic get a remake! I think that this game is long overdue for one. It has one of the best stories in not just gaming, but in all of Star Wars in my opinion, and needs to be brought forward to this generation so younger players who may not have ever played it can experience it!

I think I would keep the story nearly exactly the same, but I can imagine how great all the planets would look with current or next gen graphics! I would definitely change the combat system, as it is a bit archaic now and I know friends who would never play it because of the combat system.

I would make it a lot more action oriented, but still a role-playing game where you could level up your skills and attributes. I’m thinking action that would be a bit of a cross between Mass Effect 2 and Jedi: Fallen Order. Yeah, give me Carth as a playable companion with Mass Effect’s shooting mechanics!

Anyway, my fingers are crossed that this one becomes reality!

Three good choices
This is going to sound boring but one game I hope they remake is Final Fantasy 6, as I never played it at the time, since I didn’t have a SNES and as Final Fantasy 7 was my first Japanese role-playing game, which I first played in 2000 on PS1.

The reason I say it is boring is because the Final Fantasy 7 remake has not been finished yet and I am asking for another Final Fantasy game to be remade, not that they are boring games – not at all. I have got Final Fantasy 6 on PlayStation 3 downloaded from PSN Store. I have started it a few times from the beginning and not got far because for me the game has aged a lot, even though I didn’t play it at the time – although I did play my Mega Drive and a few SNES games on friends consoles.

I will try it again at some point, and try to play further and complete it, as I heard the story is good and that some people think it is the best Final Fantasy. Another game that I wish they would remake is Panzer Dragoon Saga which I played for the first time and completed in 2007. I really enjoyed this game a lot, it did cost me a lot at the time to buy it and it’s worth even more now, going by eBay’s prices.

It would be cool to play it with some updated visuals and 5.1 sound. It’s still a good game but when I played it in 2007 the cut scenes were good but they would look much better nowadays in full screen, as I think the window for the cutscenes was a lot smaller than they are now.

My third choice for remaking would be Snatcher as you can only get the English language version on Sega Mega CD and like Panzer Dragoon Saga is going for huge prices on eBay. I was disappointed that the PC Engine only had the option for Japanese language, I now know it was never released on PC Engine in English but unless I learn Japanese or pay £350 for the Sega CD version then I won’t be able to play it.

I originally got Panzer Dragoon Saga UK PAL version for about £100-ish in 2005. I think creating a good remake opens up the game to new gamers and gamers who originally played the game, for example Final Fantasy 7, 20 years ago. I wasn’t sure if I would get Final Fantasy 7 Remake but
after all the good reviews for it, including from GameCentral, I will get it at some point.

Features & Changes GTA 6’s World Needs

Rockstar will need to improve on nearly every aspect of GTA 5 in order to meet fan expectations for Grand Theft Auto 6, and one of the most important areas to work on is the actual area players will be exploring. Grand Theft Auto 6′s map needs a few essential features to be successful, including new additions and changes from previous GTA games.

Rumors and supposed leaks have long placed GTA 6′s setting in Vice City, the Miami-inspired location last seen in the 2006 game GTA: Vice City Stories. It’s also been said to take place in multiple time periods, possibly hopping back and forth between Vice City and another location, such as GTA 4′s Liberty City. Still, none of this is confirmed, and GTA 6 could theoretically take place anywhere in the GTA universe – including an entirely original location.

Related: GTA 6 Location Theory: The Setting Will Be Carcer City, Not Vice City

A recent report confirms GTA 6 is Rockstar’s next game – or, at least, another “large game” in the GTA series is – but it is currently still early in development. Luckily, that means Rockstar has plenty of time to develop the map and expand on what made previous GTA open worlds so compelling.

Things GTA 6’s Map Needs To Add & Change From GTA 5

Eclipse Towers in Grand Theft Auto V

More Biome Diversity

Grand Theft Auto settings have generally been based heavily on real-world locations. GTA 5′s Los Santos is a fictionalized version of Los Angeles, for example, and that means its environments are limited to the ones found in southern California. While GTA 6 should keep this kind of realism, its setting should be carefully chosen to allow more environmental variety. GTA 5 had a city, suburbs, countryside, mountains, and deserts, but the general feel of every area was hot and dry. GTA 6 could reasonably find a way to implement swamps, beaches, archipelagos, cities, suburbs, mountains, and forests all in the same map. It might require a slight suspension of disbelief, but it would be worth it for the lowered chance of players getting bored.

More Interesting Locations

The GTA 5 map is big, and GTA 6′s should be, too (or at least deep). But players like Reddit users KicksButtson and unariginol_usernome have found frustration with the lack of things to do in GTA 5′s open world. Grand Theft Auto 6′s world should have more unique locations for players to interact with. Inclusions like an abandoned mine cart track, a weirdly big skate park, and other strange locales would do a lot to improve the intrigue of the world and provide players with things to do – even if the locations are devoid of life and actual, interactive objects. Something like an empty water reservoir or an abandoned hanger bay full of destructible objects would allow players to create their own fun. This would be especially important if GTA 6′s Online utilizes the same map as its single-player story, since players could collaborate to give these locations purpose.

Related: How Grand Theft Auto 6 Should Support Roleplay

More Buildings With Interiors

Part of adding more interesting locations, as well as a big request from fans, is allowing players to go into more buildings. Los Santos looks huge on the surface, but a relatively small number of buildings actually have interiors, which can make the city feel like shallow set-dressing rather than a real place to explore. Even on powerful next-gen consoles, it would be unreasonable to expect every single building in GTA 6′s city to have an indoor space, but giving even a fifth of the structures at least some interior would go a long way towards making GTA 6′s setting more believable and interesting than past games. This would also be extremely useful for GTA Online roleplayers, who have helped keep GTA 5 relevant for years after its release.

New Changes Over Time

One of the biggest improvements GTA 6 Online needs to make is the addition of a world that evolves over the course of the game’s life. A GTA 6 Online evolving world would help the multiplayer mode compete with other popular “live service” games like Fortnite, which has grabbed tons of attention with its map-changing updates. GTA 6 could utilize similar incremental changes in both multiplayer and single-player. Online changes could be made in content updates, and GTA 6′s single-player world could evolve based on story events, such as an earthquake or a bombing, or based on post-game DLC. According to the Kotaku report that seemingly confirmed GTA 6′s development, the next GTA game will begin as “a moderately sized release (which, by Rockstar’s standards, would still be a large game) that is then expanded with regular updates over time,” so this seems to be exactly what Rockstar is planning.

How To Make Sure You Secure A PS5 Pre-Order

Games Inbox: Would you pay £500 for a PS5?

How much would you be willing to pay for a PS5? (pic: Sony)

The Friday Inbox is glad to see Crysis get another chance at fame, as a reader is terrified of his terraforming powers in Animal Crossing.

To join in with the discussions yourself email [email protected]

Monetary maximum
The PlayStation 4 was $399.99 when it launched and that worked out at £349.99. That means the most optimistic UK price for the PlayStation 5 is £449.99, if that Bloomberg report is accurate. I’m sorry that is too much. Especially as modern exchange rates means it would probably be closer to £500 (thanks Brexit!).

There is no way I’m paying the for a new console. Not given how bad most launch games are and how you’ll probably not see anything decent for it for two years or so. I can’t believe that I’m alone in thinking that either, especially given the lockdown problem of people both being skint and sick of sitting around indoors.

That said, I still think they should release it this year. I’m sure there’s plenty of super fans that will pay anything to get it as early as possible and the sooner it comes out the sooner we get over the boring launch period and start to work towards the good games. If I can’t afford one for two years or so I bet I will have missed nothing, except not getting a hole in my wallet.
Kendo

Inscrutable plans
So if Sony aren’t changing their plans for the PlayStation 5 because of coronavirus, that implies they always meant to release an overly expensive console with limited stock this year? I don’t want to ask a stupid question but… why?

I guess the answer is probably that they knew the Xbox Series X was coming up and even though they weren’t really they wanted it out this year? I guess that makes sense, except for why they’re so behind on making the console, since they announced their next gen plans first.

As others have pointed out the coronavirus outbreak is helping to obscure a lot of really bad decisions lately. By their own omission it hasn’t got anything to do with what’s happening with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and Nintendo had already clammed up long before the lockdown started. The only thing that’s happened is a few games have been delayed by a month or two – a much shorter delay than the ones we got at the start of the year for… reasons.

Sometimes I wish Apple or someone would come in with their own console and be a lot better organised and professional. And then essentially that happened with Google and it was a complete disaster. I guess running a video games business is harder than it looks. Although given me a spreadsheet and a calendar and I still reckon I could do a better job. Day 1: release a bunch of games at regular intervals and not all on the same day….
Sgt. Candy

GTA 6.1
With GTA 6 now all but confirmed I find myself strangely unable to picture what it will be like, or even what I’d like it to be. GTA Online has become such a beast that I really don’t know where they go from here. I guess it’ll be a giant open world with multiple cities, like San Andreas, and yet that seems to be exactly the opposite of what the latest rumours are suggesting.

Or maybe that’s exactly what they’re planning and at first it’ll be just one city, then another, and another? That actually sounds pretty good to me. They could even have smaller updates adding the areas in-between so that there’s always something going on.

That’d keep the game in the news constantly and ensure the developers don’t get taken advantage of. I still don’t know what the theme would be, since I’m that interested in seeing any of the cities from previous games again, but if that’s how it’ll be released I like the idea.

Third time lucky
Very glad to hear that Crysis is making a comeback but somehow I doubt that game will ever really be a hit. GC are right to point out that it already had a remaster last gen and absolutely nobody paid it any attention. I don’t what it is but it just doesn’t seem to click with many people. I’d say it was slightly bland story and art design but plenty of popular games are just as bad so I don’t really know.

I was always surprised that the game got two sequels as to this day I’ve still never met anyone in the real world that’s ever heard of the game, let alone cared about it.

The great thing about it, apart from the graphics, is how open-ended it was. The stages weren’t that big but you were given a lot of freedom about how you navigate them and the way you could customise your suit meant you could play it more stealthy if you wanted or like a tank or sniper.

Thinking about it, maybe that’s what put people off: the lack of hand-holding could be off-putting to some I guess. They certainly got rid of it in the later games, so they must’ve thought that was a problem. Shame, but maybe it’ll be more lucky this time round.
Klobb

Absolute power
So it finally happened, K.K. has come to perform, the credits have rolled, and I at long last have unlocked the ability to terraform my island. And… I’m terrified. I’m not an artistic person and now find myself completely overwhelmed by the possibilities I have at my disposal. I have actually had the ability for three days but am yet to do so much as forge a single cliff or dig a tiny fish pond.

There’s just too many ways I could go with my newfound power. Every idea I have causes anxieties – will I leave enough trees and flowers for the bugs? What if I spend hours creating my paradise only to then unlock some cool new items which no longer fit in? Will I remember to keep an elevated lake for that darn stringfish? For now, my poor island paradise remains as uncultivated and wild as the day I arrived (except that it now has a flushing toilet on the beach). Have any other readers suffered similarly?

Just wanted to add my agreement to Chaosphere616’s comments about the DualSense controller. I have both joint hypermobilty syndrome and fibromyalgia, which means that I can’t even tolerate the vibrations on a controller.

So all this talk of haptic feedback making games more immersive, etc. is a big no-no for me! I just hope it’s optional, like switching the vibration off of a DualShock for PlayStation 3 and 4.
LastYearsModel

GC: What you don’t want is for them to take the same attitude they did with the lightbar, and refuse to let you turn it off completely.

Merchandise sales
Just to chip in on the subject. I don’t know if it’s been mentioned on here before, but I think a big part of the reason Sony has delayed The Last of Us Part 2 is to avoid everyone downloading the game on day one.

I expect they’ve got thousands of boxes containing statues, booklets, T-shirts and all sorts of other tat which they’ll never shift if everyone just buys it digitally rather than going to a shop.
Anon

GC: That’s definitely a factor. Collector’s Editions are super profitable as well.

No explanation
So, a dual screen… Switch. I don’t get it. Assuming the rumours are true (the info seems legit, the question is whether it’s still something Nintendo is planning to make) I just can’t picture how it’d work or what purpose it would serve.

The DS and 3DS had two screens because only the bottom one was touchscreen and so was often obscured by your hand and you needed the other screen to see everything clearly. But very few Switch games use the touchscreen, even when it would be useful, and I can’t think of any where it’s the only control system.

So are Nintendo suddenly going to release a wave of touchscreen-only games? That seems very unlikely, especially as they’d instantly become unplayable when the console was docked.

None of this makes any sense to me and I can’t even guess what’s going on. The other thing is maybe it’s a clamshell design and they just want a bigger screen, so it’d be like those phones with the fold out screen. I can’t see that though. That tech is unreliable and expensive, which is exactly the sort of thing Nintendo tries to avoid.

Oh well, maybe one day (month? year?) soon we’ll get a proper Nintendo Direct and clear all this up.
Danse

GC: We can’t think of any obvious explanation either, but that almost makes it more likely that it’s something Nintendo is going to try.

Having played WWE 2K20 I think it needs more than a year off to be any good. That last game was terrible and has pretty much put me of the franchise for life. That and the recent cut backs at the real thing.

This week’s Hot Topic
The question for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Cranston, who asks what game would you like to see get a major remake in the style of Final Fantasy 7?

Despite once being very rare, remakes have become more and more prominent in recent years, thanks to Resident Evil and Final Fantasy, but what games would you like to see get the same treatment? Bear in mind that these would be full remakes, not simple remakes, with perhaps little in common with the original gameplay.

What would you change about the story and graphics and what elements would you ensure were exactly the same as before? Are there any games you wouldn’t want to see undergo a remake or are they all fair game?
